MESSINA - "There are 273 municipalities in Sicily at risk landslides or floods, that is 70% of the total". These are the figures that emerge from the hydrogeological dossier presented by Legambiente in Sicily.

The primacy of the more fragile province goes to Caltanissetta with 86% of local authorities as being at risk, followed by Messina, with 84% of the municipalities, and Agrigento and Trapani, both with 79% of the municipalities exposed to the danger of landslides and floods.

90% of municipalities have homes in riverside areas, in the beds of rivers or in areas with landslide risk, 54% of government has indeed entire neighborhoods in areas at risk, while 67% have built structures in these areas and industrial buildings. Still, in 29% of cases occur in areas exposed to risk, even sensitive structures, such as schools and hospitals.

Overall, between houses, industrial buildings and sensitive structures, we can estimate that in 273 municipalities in Sicily as being at risk by the Ministry of Environment and UPA, there are over 180 thousand people daily exposed to danger.

Worrying the situation of securing the territory: in only 8% of cases have been started with the relocation of homes from the areas at risk. Among the Sicilian municipalities at risk, nearly nine out of ten do not play still an overall positive work of hydrogeological instability.

50% of the municipalities in Sicily has prepared an emergency plan which deal with crisis situations such as landslides and floods, but only 36% of municipalities have updated the plan in the last two years, this fact is extremely serious since the old plans may constitute a serious limitation in case of necessity.

The municipalities of Sicily still do not seem to have placed the issues of prevention of floods and landslides in the priorities of their work - explained Enzo Colavecchio, Circle Legambiente Peloritani - "Regional and local authorities have to propose a real 'revolution' on the front prevention and emergency management".

Significantly, this year no Sicilian town has reached the class on the topic for the excellent work done in landslide risk mitigation activities. It differs, however, positive in Gela, which reaches a score of 7 in the report card.

Emerge in the negative, however, the common Bolognetta (Pa) and Ravanusa (Ag), which despite having homes, industries and entire neighborhoods in these areas at risk have not initiated any action to relocate, nor do they have the necessary tools to organize a good system of local Civil Defence.
