Massive damage caused by storms PDF Print E-mail

MESSINA - An exceptional storm has hit the north-eastern Sicily, causing heavy damage and disruption to road traffic. The worst-hit area is the south of Messina, already devastated by the flood of October 2009 which caused 37 deaths and dozens wounded.

On the highway A18 Messina-Catania, traffic has been severely penalized by several landslides, the most delicate situations have occurred in Tremestieri, Santo Stefano, Scaletta and Ali, where both lanes were literally invaded by debris and water.

In the village of Giampilieri and in the neighboring town of Scaletta Zanclea, either already affected by the flooding of October 1, 2009, there have been landslides and mudflows. Some people, for fear, have fled their homes.

Shops and flooded basements, streets invaded by debris. Numerous requests for assistance received by the operating room of firefighters. For the heavy rains, a torrent overflowed in Galati, blocking a bridge for several hours and isolating the inhabitants of the area.

The carabineers have rescued a man and a woman that were trapped inside a car in the waters of an overflowing river in the village of Zafferia. In the same morning, the Carabiineers have rescued the components of two families, including an elderly woman with her caregivers, stuck for the mud in their homes in the village of Santo Stefano Briga.

Violent storm also in the province of Catania and Siracusa where, in the morning, a team of firefighters has intervened on the provincial road 10, near the entrance to the town of Ferla, due to the fall of some boulders on the roadway.
