Two artificial hearts transplanted at ISMETT PDF Print E-mail

PALERMO - It was performed, for the first time in Sicily, the implantation of two next-generation artificial hearts or rather ventricular assist systems that can replace the heart function by supporting the bloodstream.

The surgery, carried out in Palermo, at the ISMETT (Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Highly Specialized Therapies), was performed in two sicilian patients of 50 years, on the list for heart transplant and now dying for the deterioration of conditions general clinics, linked to severe heart failure terminal.

For Bruno Gridelli, Director of the centre, "making available ventricular assist means from one side ensure the highest level of care available today of heart failure in the world and from other side rational use of health resources."

"The application of this sophisticated technology - says Michael Pilato, program manager for cardiac surgery and heart transplantation of the Mediterranean - requires, in addition to surgery, the contribution and dedication of a multi-disciplinary team capable of monitoring 24 hours a day the patient's clinical status implanted. At the time both patients had a smooth postoperative course and, most likely, will be able to wait for an organ transplant, surviving the otherwise fatal heart disease. "

The artificial hearts are made of miniature centrifugal pumps, totally implantable within the patient's chest.
